Another floated idea was a third group of Mechanicus. Not quite hardliners, and not quite hereteks these guys float in the middle and are super secret with reverse engineering and massive knowledge. annnnnd GO

I personally roleplay an Explorator who does this with archeotech. About 1 in every 3 bits he finds he winds up breaking irreparably, but otherwise gets to keep a well-made copy or four for himself. ...The guy has a Tech-Use of 96.

I like this idea for not fitting into the Mechanicus dichotomy, and technology is something everyone wants so the story has the ability to bring in a lot of factions. I had the idea of my stories following a Space Marine company or chapter that made the factions protection its mission. More about these Magos, are they more humane or just as heartless as the ruling faction? Maybe they believe that being in touch with humanity gets them closer tithe Omnissiah? What do they hope to accomplish by advancing current tech?
