Hey all, I've had a story concept in my head for many months which I was hoping to get some feedback and ideas on. Basically, take the war in heaven (as described in religious texts) and turn it into something new. So, use the characters, concepts and plot of the war, but have it occur in a modern, sci-fi or fantasy setting. There's a lot of material to work with and room to play around with it, the Horus Heresy is a good example as that was based off this as well. Which means I'll have to avoid similarities haha I was keen on the idea of following some regular humans as they try to survive a global conflict in the modern day, have it set in ruined cities and such. Could have a lot of fun with the idea of Heaven and Hell's armies battling it out with human factions taking sides, or even just trying to survive the collateral. Tanks and jets vs Angels would be pretty cool, though. Alternatively, I could do it in a fantasy setting, such as mixing the concept in with my love of samurai, or perhaps the Crusade era? It's a broad idea, so any input to help shape it would be awesome

For inspiration in writing this, there's an author that you might like. James Lovegrove has been writing what is described as "Godpunk", he takes pantheons and puts them in modern settings with military sci-fi. So far he's done Age of Odin (Norse), Age of Ra (Egyptian), Age of Zeus (Greek), Age of Jaguar (Aztec) and Age of Voodoo. A common theme is mortal man being oppressed by and then fighting against the Gods.
For this I'd love to see a kind of modern world war with both demons and angels involved. Making these divine/unholy beings more human would help to integrate them and would be interesting to see. The mental image of men preparing for war, going over maps and battle plans when the son of god walks in, in full BDU's and tactical gear and glowing despite dust and grit is fantastic.

Huh, interesting. I did try looking for similar stories but couldn't find any.
Yeah, exactly, I was imagining following a small group trying to find their way towards any kind of military setup, in order to protect themselves (kinda like they often do in zombie films). Then they'd probably get conscripted into the forces, finding the leaders to be of a divine nature. Lower angel classes could be squad leaders, Arch-Angels leading the entire operation (and middle ranks leading the inbetween). I was playing with the idea that the angels are not our creators, but an ancient race who tried to guide our own with religion - give it a "explanation of our history" twist. The 'enemy' would have a twist of their own, but I haven't thought of much for them yet.But these are all just ideas so far.

Try a setting similar to the Sword of Shannara trilogy, if you read it that is.

Ya know the idea of an ancient guiding race, in lieu of actually divine beings is kinda fun. It might be cool to introduce it in a sidelong fashion. One of those things where even when we start fighting on one or the other sides behalf they maintain the facade till its discovered by humans (presumably the main characters group), or maybe even make it the "good" angel side thats continuing the facade of divinity.
So the Angels and Demons have a mass war near earth. In ancient times, they hand down essentially what would become the basis of religions on earth and kind of step back. Now the war has broken out again, and while the Angels maintain the air of divinity, even going so far as to appoint leadership roles only to their own Angelic soldiers, the demons have just let out of the bag the truth. Which explains the divide of humanity, otherwise who would really side with demons?
Kinda twists it on its head of who the actual bad guys are.

I haven't read it, Ares, but I'll look it up And yeah, that's the kind of thing I was going to go for. I'd try to fit an "explanation" in at some point, by an angel towards the end. Explaining who they were, what happened in the past (pretty much what you suggested) and the fact that they gave humans religion to steady their morals, give them something to strive for. But warlords and powerful figures used that very religion to create wars, instead of using it for peace. Explain that the 'angels' debated whether it was worth saving the humans, and came to a conclusion they will. But for what purpose is not revealed (and it ain't gonna be none of that "human spirit" shit either hahaha) Why the war started in the first place will be tricky, I need to work on that.
